Introduction:
A fire extinguisher is an active fire protection device used to extinguish or control
small fires, often in emergency situations. It is not intended for use on an
out-of-control fire, such as one which has reached the ceiling, endangers the
user (i.e., no escape route, smoke, explosion hazard, etc.), or otherwise
requires the expertise of a fire brigade. Typically, a fire
extinguisher consists of a hand-held cylindrical pressure vessel
containing an agent that can be discharged to extinguish a fire. Fire
extinguishers manufactured with non-cylindrical pressure vessels also exist but
are less common.

extinguisher Usage:
The following four-step technique can be memorized more
easily with the acronym PASS:
1.
Pull: Pull the pin to break the tamper seal.
2.
Aim: Aim low, pointing the nozzle or hose at the
base of the fire. (Do not touch the horn on a CO2 extinguisher since it becomes
very cold and can damage the skin.
3.
Squeeze: Squeeze the handle to release the
extinguishing agent.
4.
Sweep: Sweep from side to side at the base of the
fire – the fuel source – until the fire is extinguished.

HOW CO2 FIRE
EXTINGUISHERS WORK:
CO2 fire extinguishers discharge CO2 gas, also known as carbon
dioxide. This is stored in the extinguisher as a liquid, and the gas is
created under pressure when the handle of the extinguisher is squeezed.
This
causes the CO2 gas to emerge at great speed, which is why CO2 fire
extinguishers are not recommended for chip pan fires – they could literally
blast the flames into surrounding areas.
Unlike
water and foam extinguishers, CO2 fire extinguishers do not work by cooling the
fire and so are ineffective on fires involving flammable solids.
Instead,
CO2 extinguisher work by replacing the oxygen surrounding the flames with
carbon dioxide, meaning the fire can no longer burn.
